Research Findings
Scientific analysis and recent research have revealed gum disease may represent a far more serious threat to our health then most people realize.
It has been established that chronic inflammation, resulting from periodontal disease is responsible for 70 percent of all adult tooth losses and effects 75 percent of people at some point in their lives. That’s serious enough, yet recent research has shown that gum disease can be an even bigger threat.
Studies have found that periodontal (gum) infection may contribute to the development of heart disease, which is the nations number one cause of death. The association between chronic oral infections extends to diabetes, lung disease, stroke and even pregnancy issues.
Periodontitis can develop in as short as three months time and a routine hygiene appointment or cleaning will not effectively treat this disease.

| What is Periodontal Disease? | |
Periodontal disease is an infectious and inflammatory disease which destroys the gum and the bone that supports your teeth.
Periodontal disease effects 3 out of 4 adults. It is caused by Plaque. Plaque is the sticky clear film which forms on teeth every day and is made up mainly of microscopic germs. Plaque germs feed on many of the foods we eat. Plaque produces acid as it feeds and this acid is the major cause of tooth decay and gum disease.
It is possible to have periodontal disease and have no warning signs. One reason why regular dental check ups and periodontal examinations are very important. If detected in the early stages, periodontal disease can be treated and controlled.
